Issa Rae Launches Viarae, a Prosecco

Rae liked it so much she even made it her Insecure character’s drink of choice — mixed with either a dash of Jameson or vodka, a sort of mixology-free take on a French 75 that led to much discussion during the series’ run. Since then, she’s been known for keeping a glass at hand both on screen and off to celebrate or just as background to some much-needed bonding time; she counts Sara The Wine Bar in Culver City as one of her favorite places to catch up with a friend over a glass.

"It's been my signature drink of choice and it's just followed me literally on trips, on celebrating my friends' special occasions," Rae says. "It's just such a staple drink for me."

Viarae is a partnership between Rae and California-based E. & J. Gallo Winery — owners of solid supermarket brands like Barefoot Bubbly and La Marca as well as higher-end labels — and, according to the brand, is meant to be enjoyed as an “any-occasion” treat. While the label is Rae’s first wine offering, it’s not her first venture into the food and beverage scene. Rae is a partner in Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, a South L.A.-based chain whose newest location in DTLA will open a rooftop wine bar soon. It’s all part of Rae’s expanding interest in economic progress for Los Angeles, and her community in South L.A. in particular.

"I wanted to be more aware of the brands that I was promoting,” Rae says about her decision to launch her own wine label. "And I was like, 'I want to make one that I actually own myself, that I can stand behind so that I'm recommending a drink and if people want to try it because of me, that it comes from me.'"

According to Rae, expect Viarae to conjure spring and summer vibes, with a bright citrusy flavor profile that runs more dry than sweet, just as she likes it. And in case you’re wondering, while Rae enjoys her Prosecco on its own, she still swears by mixing it with a liquor of your choice, whether that’s whiskey, vodka or her new favorite, tequila — a combination she calls "phenomenal."

"It's meant to have company," she says.
